About the Artist
Brittany Butler
Hello, my name is Brittany Butler, and I am the face behind Hudson & Mé. I wouldn’t be able to speak much about myself, without first speaking of my grandmother. Born in a small community in the Lake Athabasca region of Saskatchewan, my grandmother was by far one of the most influential people in my life growing up. She is also the inspiration behind the name of my business.
My grandmother took great pride in her Métis and Indigenous heritage, as well as her families involvement with the fur trade in the North, and work with the Hudson’s Bay Company. In honour of that, I named my business Hudson & Mé, a nod to both that heritage, and my exploration of the “Métis” in “Me”.
I began my beading journey in 2016, along with my mother and aunt. Despite being completely taken with the art of Métis beadwork, I found it to be much more challenging than I anticipated, and ended up putting it down for a few years.
In 2020, during the peak of the pandemic, and while spending time caring for an ill parent, I picked up beading once again. Beading this time felt very different, being both therapeutic and healing for me at just the right time in my life.
My grandmother’s humility, stories, and love for florals has been my biggest inspiration when creating new designs.
After some lovely encouragement from my friends and family, I decided to begin selling my beadwork. I quickly decided that whenever the opportunity presented itself, I would donate a portion of my profits to community organizations that support my fellow Métis and Indigenous kin.
Recently, I have decided to branch out designing and selling apparel items. I would love to one day see someone walk past me, dressed head to toe in Hudson & Mé apparel and beadwork.
