Carly Lawton – Fur Trimmed Mitts

Carly Lawton is a Red River Metis student, educator, artist, and scholar. Born in Edmonton, she grew up in the historic Metis community of Victoria Beach, spending her childhood with Metis and Ojibway friends from Sagkeeng and Brokenhead. Now a city girl in her homelands of Winnipeg for over 10 years, Carly has been on a personal journey of reconnecting to her Metis culture on her dad’s side. One of those ways of reconnecting is Metis art. She has been beading and doing leather work since 2019 and owes her new-found talents to the many First Nations and Metis women who have taught her.
