About the Artist
Nichelle Renee Wilk
Nichelle Renee Wilk is a proud Métis woman who was born and raised in Brandon, Manitoba, on Treaty 2 Territory, part of the Homeland of the Red River Métis. She is a single parent of her 9-year-old boy named Kayson, full time student at Brandon University (BU) entering her third year in the fall of 2023. She plans to achieve a 4-year double major in Native Studies and Sociology and further attain a Bachelor of Social Work degree.
Nichelle is a strong, independent woman, a survivor of domestic violence and addiction. In 2020, she started her journey of recovery and entered her studies at BU in 2021 where she has been able to connect with her culture by attending lodge ceremony for prayer and healing.
Throughout her time so far at BU, she has found healing and a safe place to share some of her life experience and artistic talent through contemporary Indigenous based art courses with artist Kevin McKenzie. Nichelle was given an opportunity to experiment with Indigenous contemporary traditional art techniques and has started to incorporate resin work with her bead work. She makes handcrafted epoxy resin earring cabs, phone grips, and letter keychains that contain sacred medicine (sage, tobacco, cedar, sweetgrass, and lavender). For her, beading and art are medicine.
