Description

As children, many of us dream of venturing into the vast northern tundra; racing down raging rivers in canoes; and sitting around the campfires on the shores of the Arctic Ocean while keeping a keen eye out for polar bears. For most of us, those childhood fantasies get pushed aside as life intervenes. But not for Murray Gillespie.

Growing up in Macdonald, Manitoba, Murray was steeped in the lore of generations of hunters and trappers passed on by his family. His curiosity caught the attention of a local naturalist, who set the leg of Murray's pet crow, and went on to mentor Murray in the ways of the natural world. His childhood was spent exploring the forests and wetlands around him. In such a rich setting, Murray's interest in nature became a passion that led him to a lifetime in the wild.

Over his 45 years with the Wildlife Services, Murray lived in some of the most remote and magnificent parts of Canada. From the shores of Hudson's Bay to the high Arctic, Murray (in canoes and bush planes, on foot and snowmobiles), strived to protect the wildlife he loved. And it wasn't easy. Despite lost bush pilots; propane explosions; and an ill-advised canoe expedition that nearly cost his life, Murray never tired of observing and appreciating the magnificence around him.

Along the way, he encountered an array of interesting characters – both human and animal – including a Coke-loving arctic fox; a polar bear that punched a hole in their helicopter windshield; and hordes of black flies so numerous their bites turned his beard red from the blood.

Murray's stories ring with authenticity and deep love for the land he worked in. Deeply human, they explore our interconnected relationship with the wild. This is a book of compelling stories that take you to places you only dreamed of as a child. And after you've read them, you'll feel like you have, finally, truly been there.
