Jacqueline Bercier – Miskobineshii

My name is Jacqueline Miskobineshiikwe Bercier Carter.

My home community is Selkirk, Manitoba. My family names are: Bercier, Lillie/Lilly, Favel, Smith, Loutit, and Taylor. I am very proud of my Red River Métis identity and celebrate it everyday.

I am a full-time Educator, but I am also an artist producing digital artwork. I am influenced by the Woodland art styles of Norval Morrisseau and Blake Angeconeb, the Métis Floral work of Christi Belcourt, the bright colours of Leah Dorian and the traditional shapes and colours from Lisa Sheppard’s beadwork. As of late, I have been expanding beyond traditional Métis design and moving into more playful creations, like Kawaii art styles and retro cartoon art.

I have been an artist for over 40 years, but it has taken a backseat to my career as an Educator. It has only been within the last year I have concentrated on it for my enjoyment as well as my mental health.

My stepfather, Robert Loutit was my biggest influence into becoming an artist. He encouraged me from a young age to try different mediums and find my niche. He was the best mentor I could ever have as he was highly skilled and talented.

Storytelling and cultural connections have been my anchors for all my art pieces. Attending ceremony, listening to Elders, spending time with family has influenced the images in my artwork.

I hope people find my art fun, refreshing, inspiring and something that they want to add to their own collections.
