My name is Alawna Leforte, and I am proud Red River Metis. I grew up in the Turtle Mountain area near Deloraine, MB (Treaty 2 territory). I am a high school alternative program teacher who is passionate about Indigenous literature, and I enjoy creating art in my spare time.
I started to learn beadwork applique to make poppies paying tribute to my grandfather who was a Metis veteran and fiddler. I have branched out to create earrings and pins. I plan to continue to create exploring new mediums, learning my history, and reconnect with my culture.
I dream of a day where I can have a trapper’s cabin on raw land where I can create, read, spend time with my family, and my three dogs on the land.
